The Ship Virginia

2007 ​was the 400th Anniversary of the Popham Colony, Maine's first English settlement located  in the Popham area of Phippsburg, where you can find information markers at the bayside site.

The Virginia was the first known large wooden ship to be built in New England. The colony was abandoned in 1608 and the Virginia sailed back to England, then assisted in the colony's explorations and trading efforts along the coast, sailing to Jamestown in 1609. The Virginia's replica is underway at the Freight Shed in Bath, ME. All are welcome to see this wooden ship being built. Visiting hours listed at:
